565 - First recorded sighting of the Loch Ness monster.
1775 - King George III proclaimed the American colonies to be in open rebellion.
He got the memo rather late.
1846 - The United States annexed New Mexico.
1851 - The schooner America won a trophy in a British race that became known as the America's Cup. The cup remained in American hands until an Australian team won it in 1983.

1906 - The Victrola phonograph was introduced.
These machines cost over $100 at a time when the average workingman earned around $2 a day, but there was enormous demand for them.
