1883 - The Krakatoa volcano began to erupt. It was probably the most energetic volcanic eruption in human history. The island of Krakatoa was completely obliterated, and worldwide weather was disrupted for about two years.

My favorite bit of trivia related this event is that persistent red skies caused panic and hysteria, and may have been the inspiration for Edvard Munch's famous painting, "The Scream." However, "The Scream" was painted ten years later.

1920 - The 19th Amendment, guaranteeing women the right to vote, went into effect.

1986 - The corpse of Jennifer Levin, age 18, was found in Central Park. The so-called Preppie Murder case ensued. It was maybe the 10th "trial of the century" in the 20th century.
