FORT WORTH -- A man suspected of breaking into a south-side business late Wednesday was hospitalized in serious condition Thursday after he was shot by an employee with a concealed-carry permit, police said.
Officers at 11:30 p.m. went to Lon Smith Roofing, 904 E. Waggoman St., to investigate a report of a shooting, said Sgt. Pedro Criado, police spokesman.
They soon learned that a company employee, who had the state-issued concealed handgun permit, had responded to an alarm at the business.
When the worker arrived he saw a man in his mid 30s coming out of the business "with some stolen property," Criado said in a news release.
The employee warned the man that he had a weapon and ordered him to stop, Criado said.
"The suspect reportedly charged the employee," Criado said. "The employee shot the suspect with one shot from a .38-caliber handgun."
Police arrested the suspect, who was taken to John Peter Smith Hospital in Fort Worth in serious condition, Criado said.
The case was still under investigation Thursday, but Criado said it would undergo a routine examination by a Tarrant County grand jury, which will determine if it should go to trial.
