The above is a link to an 8/28/09 DMN article. I post this as an example of how people in
trouble need to do any seemingly crazy thing to get away from bad guys.

Summary: A 15 year old girl brought sex-related charges against a 45 year old man.
The man recruited some people to kidnap the now-16 year old and her mother, in order
to prevent their testimony.
They were shown fake ICE badges, handcuffed in North Dallas, and bundled into a Lincoln
Continental 4 door. They headed southbound on I-35E, then continued on I-35.

By the time they reached Austin (about 200 miles) they knew the kidnappers weren't really
LEO's. The handcuffed mom climbed into the front seat and headbutted and kicked the bad
guys so they could hardly drive. When they pulled over the mom escaped and got the Austin LEO's
to put out a broadcast.

Shortly after, the Hays County Sheriff's Dept arrested the bad guys. The girl was unharmed.

The mom showed warrior spirit while handcuffed. She didn't give up and things worked out just
peachy.

To borrow a quote from Kathy Jackson:

"So I'll say it again, though I sound like a fool:
Your Will is the weapon. Your gun is a tool..."

The entire poem may be read here: Advice to a New Gun Owner

In the appropriate circumstances, almost anything can be turned into a defensive weapon. If you've got the Will, you're not truly "unarmed."

The Mom in the OP has my deepest respect.

As a followup to this story: the ringleader was arrested and was being held
in jail, IIRC the Lew Starrett Justice Center in downtown Dallas. His bail was
$100,000, which he made immediately and was released from jail.

Shortly after he was released from custody, the finger-pointing began.
Officials had upped his bail to $1,000,000 due to the serious charges of kidnapping,
tampering with witnesses, and threatening witnesses.

It seems that due to a bureaucratic mix-up, the increased bail was not in the computer
system of the officials who let him bond out.

His whereabouts are now unknown. A $5,000 reward is offered for his re-arrest since
the Dallas LEO's believe he may try to kill the 16 year old girl and her mother.
