Shouldn't that 1949 entry be the first hydrogen bomb or thermonuclear bomb?
I associate "atomic bomb" with U-235, two of which were "dropped in anger" in August 1945.

Thanks. That's the north end of my southbound horse and me -- 30 years ago.
Horseback riding, like bicycle riding, is very good for leg condition.

The Soviets exploded their first fission bomb in 1949. What I meant by "launching the nuclear arms race" was that after the first Soviet test, both sides felt compelled to outdo one another.
The first Soviet hydrogen bomb was in 1953.
