Surprised I didn't see a thread on here yet...

How was everyone's Dove opener?

While I didn't limit out, I had a blast with good friends. Bagged 3...they were right on a tree line, but on the other side of the fence / property line. Either that, or they were sky high. Plus, there were a LOT of guns out there today. My shoulder is sore...my SKB O/U 12ga beat me up. I finally had to move to my 870...I will be buying a recoil pad for the O/U.

I had planned to hunt yesterday. With several deadlines this week, I went to work instead.

The son-in-law, two of the grandsons (6 and 7) and I were out all day yesterday. Started west of Denton, south of Krum. Very few birds to shoot at (not to mention the lacking shotgunning talent).

Packed up and went to a place west of Italy. Lots of birds on the property across the fence (were the disced up ground was) with a few clowns that I believe were dove hunting. Their outfitter apparently knew just about as much about dove hunting as the hunters did. I finally got one, the s-i-l got 2.

All in all, a frustrating day. But as "they" say, the worst day hunting is better than the best day working.

We did get the boys out plinking with a .22 during the mid-day. They thought that was the best thing since sliced bread!!

My son-in-law is a first generation hunter. He has been going with me for about 5-6 years. I belive we have done a good job training the grandsons in the art of hunting and the shooting sports. :txflag:

We got the same lease that we had last year north west of New Braunfels.

They flew decently in the morning and pretty poorly in the evening. I wound up with 2  and my stepdad shot his limit. I'm gonna cook 'em tonight on the grill for an appetizer.

Lots more season to go and hopefully I'll find my wingshooting groove!

We went yesterday. Didn't see many dove. Shot even fewer. Those little guys are like feathered rockets!

But we got LOTS of chiggers! Anybody got a good home remedy?

Outstanding results in Young County both Tuesday and Wednesday. I came down with the flu while in the field Thursday morning and had to quit at 5 birds.
I am sure the rain Thursday night hurt those that could not make it out till the Weekend though.

Nice hunting JvT!

I made it out Saturday morning and they were sky high, flying along side Southwest Airline, so I only bagged two. Went this evening and I was the low one of the group. There were four of us and I got 6, my manager (from work) got 8, and two guys had to walk away at 14! That hurts...

Even if I don't limit, I just love being out there...

Most of the fellers I hunted with on opening day limited out. I didn't because my shot gun skills are terrible. I am trying to get used to an O/U 20 gage and have always used a good old fashion pump in 12 gage. I have been out almost every day since the opener and the more I think about what I am doing wrong, the worse it gets. Going again in the morning. The dove will have nothing to worry about as long as they stay at my end of the field. :smilelol5:

We have been seeing a lot of birds compared to some of the stories I am hearing. We are hunting north of Mckinney near Van Alstine and Westminister.

Beautiful photo JvT! You should send that into the TSRA or NRA. It would make a great cover for their next magazine! :thumbs2:

If your not pulling our chain and you really took those pictures, you have a real talent. No kidding, either one of those pictures could be published. I have to say...I am impressed. :thumbs2: :thumbs2: :thumbs2:

I totally agree 03Lightningrocks! I think that both photos should be hanging at TSRA hq. That's pure Texas to me!

I absolutely love it! ... and the caption is perfect. Definate calendar material without a doubt.
