1959 - The Soviet Luna 2 spacecraft was launched. Two days later it became the first man-made artifact on the moon.

1970 - The Soviet Luna 16 spacecraft was launched. It was the USSR's belated answer to the Apollo mission -- a robot spacecraft that picked up samples on the moon and returned them to earth.

The question of why the Soviets did not make a serious effort to put a man on the moon has not been answered, AFAIK.
