1759 - The British defeated the French in Battle of the Plains of Abraham, near Quebec. This battle is considered the turning point in the French and Indian Wars, ultimately giving Britain control of Canada.
1788 - Congress authorized the first national elections under the newly ratified Constitution and made New York City the capital of the country. Congress had already been meeting there for several years.
