1759 - The British defeated the French in Battle of the Plains of Abraham, near Quebec. This battle is considered the turning point in the French and Indian Wars, ultimately giving Britain control of Canada.

1788 - Congress authorized the first national elections under the newly ratified Constitution and made New York City the capital of the country. Congress had already been meeting there for several years.

I missed this one:

1847 - U.S. forces took Mexico City during the Mexican War.

What Americans remember about the battles at that time is memorialized in the Marine anthem, "From the halls of Montezuma..."

Mexicans remember the defense of Chapultepec Castle, the Mexican military academy. A company of cadets known as Los Niños Héroes defended the fort until their situation was hopeless. The last remaining defender, one Juan Escutia, literally wrapped himself in the Mexican flag and jumped from the walls.
