1780 - Benedict Arnold, turncoat commander of West Point, gave the British plans to the fort.
1884 - the Pennsylvania Packet or General Advertiser became the first daily newspaper published in the U.S.
1893 - Charles and Frank Duryea drove the first gasoline-powered automobile built in the U.S.
They were also the first to sell U.S.-made automobiles commercially. Their vehicle was very much a "horseless carriage" and was not a market success.
1897 - The New York Sun ran the famous "Is there a Santa Claus?" editorial.
1937 - The Hobbit was first published in the U.K.
1938 - A hurricane killed more than 600 people and caused widespread damage in New York and New England.
1981 - Sandra Day O'Connor took her seat on the Supreme Court.
Justice O'Connor was electged to office in Arizona as a Republican and appointed by President Reagan. Her nomination was approved by a near-unanimous vote in the Senate.
1983 - During a press conference, Secretary of the Interior James Watt said of a commission in his department, "I have a black, a woman, two Jews and a cripple. And we have talent."
The incident ultimately led to his resignation.
