Deadly conduct charges are pending against a northwest Harris County man who accidentally shot his ex-girlfriend with an assault rifle early this morning, officials said.

The woman, who was grazed in the hip area and transported to Ben Taub General Hospital, was expected to recover fully, said Sgt. Bruce Williams, with the Harris County Sheriff's Department.

The couple were talking in the parking lot outside the woman's home at the Huntwick Apartments in the 5100 block of FM 1960 West just before 2 a.m. while the man was testing the safety on the rifle, he said.

The firearm accidentally discharged, and the bullet went through the driver's side door of the man's truck and grazed the woman, he said.

Williams said reports indicated the man had been drinking.

Just cause the safety's on doesn't mean that a rifle can't fire.

hope the lady has a full recovery.

It's Darwinism at its finest. If she recovers she might have a kid with this knucklehead and the cycle continues. It's more or less an "Idiot Tax". It's the price she has to pay for dating an idiot.

I think it is always an AK because that is what the news calls any SKS/AK/Commie copy, regardless of whether or not it is an AK. The guns these guys always have are cheap. I guess they are guys who want to be tough and want to buy a battle rifle, but are too cheap to spend the money on a good AR. I have never met a thug on the street with a Colt/Bushmaster/RRA, with EOTech in a GG&G flip up rears with Surefire on a quad rail. It's always some loose-as# Chi-Com crap-box with FMJ's w/ the biggest "bananna clip  " (their words) hanging three feet below the rifle.

Just my two cents.

Yeah I think anything with a wooden stock and a mag that sticks out more than a couple inches is an "AK-47" by media standards.

because it does exactly what it was designed to do and it does it extremely well. that's the only downfall of the AK.
