The above incident happened in the West Oak Cliff (the hood) area of the city of Dallas.
Although I used the term "AR-15" in the subject line, the story only described the Dallas cop's
weapon as his "service rifle." I am assuming that it was an AR-15.
One more scumbag off the streets for good.

Is it just me or does the media seem to use the term "service rifle" or some other benevolent sounding word when LEO's are involved but they use the words "assault weapon" when a civilian is involved. Kinda sounds like a double standard if ya ask me, actually it sounds like flat out bias and fear mongering on the medias part.

No, it's not you. I think you called it pretty right on. But it's not a double standard, IMO. It's "shock wording" to catch your attention, and cause you to buy the newspaper...or keep buying it. I think this article made a reasonable attempt at accurately reporting the events as they happened, and used wording to prevent alarmist emotions.
And who knows? Maybe the reporter actually knew something about guns. Sounds like it to me. After all "service rifle" more accurately and appropriately describes the LEO's gun than the other terms we commonly see.

Don't bring a cell phone to a gun fight.
