1788 - The Pennsylvania legislature elected the first two members of the U.S. Senate under the newly ratified constitution: William Maclay and Robert Morris.
1846 - Boston dentist William Morton used ether as an anesthetic for the first time outside of experiments.
Until then, and for quite a while after, patients undergoing painful procedures had to get blind drunk, literally bite the bullet, or be held down by strong men.
1954 - The submarine USS Nautilus was commissioned. It had been launched in January and been around on more than a shakedown cruise.
I don't know the specifics of that history.
1962 - James Meredith was escorted to registration at the University of Mississippi by federal marshals.
