1800 - Spain ceded the Louisiana territory, including the city of New Orleans, back to France, in a complicated transaction that I have never been able to wrap my head around.

This negotiation resulted in a couple of the six flags over Texas.

1908 - Henry Ford introduced the Model T, the most affordable automobile of the era and the most popular.

1939 - Winston Churchill described the Soviet Union as "a riddle wrapped in a mystery inside an enigma," one of his many memorable turns of phrase.

1949 - Mao Zedong proclaimed the People's Republic of China in Beijing.

Not that I have any sympathy for the Communist cause, but they have been actors on the international stage since that time.

a little factoid..

all Model T's were painted black because the black paint dried quicker than any other color
resulting in faster production .

"Any customer can have a car painted any colour that he wants so long as it is black." - Henry Ford's remark about the Model T in 1909, published in his autobiography My Life and Work (1922) Chapter IV.

I heard that a long time ago and have always thought of it every time someone breing the Model T up.
