The Jack-in-the-Box at 10th & Seawall in Galveston was robbed by two armed men at around 2 a.m. Saturday. No one was hurt.

This kind of thing is pretty rare in Galveston, but you would not find me at that time and place without a very good reason.

You're a sitting duck at 2 a.m. anywhere in public in Galveston. I don't think the cops ever solved the case of the college student abducted on the night shift at a local motel almost thirty years ago. She was working Christmas break. A lot of violent crime has gone down over the years on Galveston Island. Still, some people wouldn't live anywhere else. I don't know how that last hurricane affected those sentiments, but it must have changed some minds. Used to be some great seafood restaurants along the seawall. Memorable place for me. In the summer of 1967, I saved another cadet at the Maritime Academy there from drowning in the riptide near some piers. Went out and body surfed him back in. Those were the days.

No. I haven't set foot in a Jack-in-the-Box since their salmonella outbreak in the 1970s [sic].

Something really nasty has to be going on at 2 a.m. for me to be awake at all, and it won't involve fast food.

I grabbed food at a Jack in the Box tonight at 3 am... but I used the drive through, and kept my eyes peeled.

Any public place after 2am is a dangerous place. Is not that the one reasons for a CHL?

Yes it is, and yes it is.

These cash-based retail business are the worst. They are soft targets. Robbers know that the employees are not armed (as that might be in a non-chain liquor store, for example). They rarely have armed security (off-duty cops sometimes).

It's hardly worth the trouble of robbing the customers after getting hundreds of dollars from the store, but sometimes they do that anyway.

I know that more than likely they have some type of weapons policy, but come on. It's not like you couldn't go down the street and get the same type job if you lost that one due to being outed or even worse actually having to use your weapon. I'd carry if I had a job like that. Now, my current job, I couldn't replace the income in a short amount of time. We have a no weapons policy and I abide by it. My place of employment even has one of those nasty legal 30.06 signs. I want to write the CEO and ask him why he chooses to restict the most law abiding citizens from carry on the property. I'm sure it's an insurance thing.

I agree that this kind of scut job is fairly easy to find, but most minimum-wage workers have trouble paying the rent and putting food on the table. They can't easily come up with several hundred dollars for a handgun, and the notion probably never occurs to most of them. They also can't afford do everything necessary to get a CHL, and maybe aren't even eligible because of age or misdemeanor convictions, so they would be breaking the law that way.

(Rent in Galveston is completely out of control after Ike.)

Communities throughout Galveston County are observing National Night Out today.

The nationwide program, which is celebrated in August, has an alternate date for the state of Texas.

The program enhances awareness of heightened crime and drug prevention. It also is intended to generate support in anti-crime programs, strengthen neighborhood spirit and foster partnerships between police and communities.
