1683 - German immigrants arrived in Pennsylvania to found (duh) Germantown.

Germans are a tiny percentage of the world population, but they are heavily represented in science, philosophy, mathematics, literature, music, and American history.

1866 - The now-nearly-forgotten Reno gang committed the first robbery of a moving train in Indiana, making off with $13.000. That was a fabulous amount for the time, but the gang continued operation for decades.

1927 - The first movie with a sound track, "The Jazz Singer," premiered in New York.

1959 - The Soviet Luna 3 spacecraft took the first photographs of the "dark side" of the moon (aside from the 2001: A Space Odyssey" aliens).
