1776 - The first naval battle of Lake Champlain or Valcour Island was fought. The Americans lost the battle but won the war by delaying the British assault of Fort Ticonderoga.
1779 - General Casimir Pulaski, Polish immigrant to the U.S., died in battle at the siege of Savannah, Georgia.
1811 - The first steam-powered ferryboat, the Juliana, began operating between New York City and Hoboken, New Jersey.
1968 - Apollo 7, the first manned Apollo mission, was launched.
