1066 - William the Conqueror defeated the English at the Battle of Hastings.

The Norman Conquest created the English language (blended Anglo-Saxon and French) and many aspects of our legal system.

1912 - Theodore Roosevelt was shot by a lunatic anarchist in Milwaukee. He was not seriously injured and delivered the speech that he came to give.

1947 - Chuck Yeager became the first person to fly faster than the speed of sound and live to tell about it when he flew the experimental Bell X-1 rocket plane over Edwards Air Force Base in California.

Several other aviators probably broke the sound barrier, but their craft disintegrated catastrophically.

OK. I give up. What significance does this have? Is it a Masonic secret or something?

Didn't Hermann Goering check himself out of the Nuremburg War Crimes on this date some 60 odd years ago? :headscratch

October 14, 1944, Rommell committed suicide in the face of his trial for conspiring to assassinate Hitler.

October 15, 1946, Goering committed suicide the day before he was to be hanged for crimes against humanity.

I tend not to include events that have little to do with American history.
