Optics question on a Marlin 336 in 30 30

I recently aquired this rifle and am looking to hunt some white tail at sub 120 yards. I think I have decided on the Leupold 3x9x40 rifleman scope. I was wondering if anyone had any suggestions about the type of rings I should get, and the mount height for this rifle?

I have been considering the same. I have a couple of Marlins...a 336w in 30.30 and a 336css in .357. Neither is presently scoped. One of the options I have thought about is the high mount that allows you to see the iron sight also. The disadvantage is the added eye height for scope sighting.

I would suggest scrapping the Leupold Rifleman idea and looking for a good, clean used Leupold VariX II or VXII instead (they are usually pretty easy to find on the net). I have owned a ton of VariX and VX scopes, but from what I have heard/read, the "Rifleman" line is not even made by Leupold.
As far as rings and bases, I own 5 Marlin 336 rifles, and they all wear Talley base/ring combos. They are light weight and very well made.
