well , i've been waiting for my nightly dose of "This Day in History" , but i don't see it .
so here it goes .

1860 - Eleven-year-old Grace Bedell of Westfield, N.Y., wrote a letter to presidential candidate Abraham Lincoln, suggesting he could improve his appearance by growing a beard.

1914 - With the support of President Wilson, the Clayton Antitrust Act, which made it illegal for companies to buy competitors' stock, was passed.

1917 - Mata Hari, World War I spy, was executed by a firing squad in Vincennes, France.

1951 - I Love Lucy, starring Lucille Ball and Desi Arnaz, had its television debut.

1964 - It was announced that Nikita Khruschev was removed from his positions as premier and secretary of the Communist Party of the USSR.

1966 - The U.S. Department of Transportation was created.

1989 - Wayne Gretzky topped Gordie Howe's NHL scoring record.

1991 - Clarence Thomas got a narrow (52–48) Senate confirmation of his nomination to the Supreme Court.

1993 - Nelson Mandela and F. W. de Klerk were awarded the Nobel Peace Prize for their work to end apartheid in South Africa.

2003 - China became the third country to launch a staffed space mission.

Last night I kept getting the "Cannot start another process" message. I don't know if that means the entire forum is overworked or what. Anyway, I was tired and hung it up for the night.

That said, I posted the first "This day in history" on October 16, 2008. We've been around the calendar, so unless they come up with some new history, this is the end.

I'll keep looking for "forgotten history" and posting news.

For those who like this subject, just do a web search for "this day in history." Many sites post such lists, though they seem to come from the same database.

Be careful with http://www.scopesys.com/anyday/. They have the most comprehensive list, but they are often wrong. Many times they list an event on the day that it was first reported, rather than they day it occurred. In the past, before the invention of the telegraph and radio, news often took weeks to get out.

Also, if you want to be precise about the date, there are problems related to the transition from the Julian to the Gregorian calendar, which took centuries.

I'm glad you enjoyed it.

Next year for October 15, you can put Colorado family pulls hoax about their son floating away in a balloon. "rlol"

Seriously Jim, thanks for doing this. It has been a neat addition to the info for the board. :tiphat:

I have had the same notice on my computer several times today about starting another process. I thought it was on my end. Glad to know there is not some great thing wrong here.

As I always say, I don't own history. Other people are interested in areas that don't interest me -- sports, for example (except horse racing).

You could do a "this day in history" on any major war and have multiple events every day.

I don't think so, as I have no trouble getting to other sites.

I suspect it has something to do with resources on the web server -- maybe memory.

I got the same message constantly when I first logged on this morning, but not now.
