From a joke standpoint only. I read pistol reviews alot and it allways makes me laugh when someone says they shot and I quote 17800 rounds through his gun. How does one keep track of that #. seems I read about these high number of bullets fired alot and allways wonder how they came up with those really high numbers. Just thought it was funny what do yall think.

They buy a set number of rounds, in bulk, fire it, and since they know the quantity purchased they know how much they fired.

I keep a log book for my guns. I log in the date I shot it and number of rounds. I also note when I clean it and any other maintenance. So I can tell you I started shooting my M&P 9 on 06/2006 and I have 49,010 rounds through it. I can tell you exactly how many days I shot it - if I wanted to count my entries!

And I know several folks that keep this kind of record. Same as some folks keep the meticulous maintence records on vehicles. Had a friend that passed away several yrs ago that on his rifles he could tell you the # of rounds he shot w/ each different load.
I just want to

them then clean'em.

I can give you a real close estimate. I don’t count rounds, but I keep receipts for all ammo purchases.

I log them all - simple excel sheet for each one. Same as CompVest - date, rounds, notes. Easy peasy...

Simple
I collect and count my brass.
I sell it or use it as credit with companies that give brass discounts toward reloaded range ammo.
Even my SKS ammo purchases indicate a pretty good estimate of "shots fired".

I also keep a log for almost every firearm I own, including number of rounds fired each session. I keep a page total and a cumulative total on each page of the log. For my carry guns, I even generally track the number of rounds through each magazine (yes I number the mags). I did this when I bought several mags and wanted to make sure each of them was worthy of being carried, and just kept it up.

I number my mags as well. It is amazing how many gun issues can be traced to a magazine!

I thought I was organized.

I can tell you IF a gun has been shot and that's about it, I don't keep records, but I have my favorites and know they get more range time

I also keep a spreadsheet (Open Office, not Microsoft). I keep a record for each gun as to number of rounds fired and the type of ammo, the date and location.
I also keep a record of ammo bought, how much of it has been fired, and how much is still on hand for each type.

Buy> Load> Shoot
Check Firearm> Clean
Buy> Load> Shoot
Keeping track is too much for me, as long as the is more than 2k rounds on hand at all times I am good.

I kept track in my head when I bought my new Kimber.
I lost track somewhere around eight hundred something.
Now I can only say, "about twelve hundred rounds," but I still know, give or take fifty rounds.

It is pretty easy for me to keep track. I keep all of my ammo in 50 round boxes so counting how many rounds I shoot is easy. I kepp my gun journal in my range bag so keeping the log is easy. I think it is fun to watch the count go up!
