1682 - William Penn landed at what is now Chester, Pennsylvania. He went on to found Philadelphia and Pennsylvania.

1929 - Black Tuesday. The stock market collapsed, and thousands of paper millionaires were turned into paupers. This day is usually marked as the beginning of the Great Depression, but the U.S. economy slogged on for a few more years.

Contrary to popular belief, only one or two bankrupted investors jumped out of windows.

1967 - The musical "Hair" opened.

1969 - The first online communication took place over what would come to be called the Internet.
