1775 - The Continental Congress established the Continental Marines, the predecessor of the U.S. Marine Corps.

1871 - Henry Stanley found David Livingstone in Africa, uttering the immortal phrase "Doctor Livingstone, I presume?"

1942 - Winston Churchill, discussing the progress of WW II, said "Now this is not the end. It is not even the beginning of the end. But it is, perhaps, the end of the beginning."

1945 - Pres. Eisenhower dedicated the Marine memorial in Arlington, Virginia.

1975 - The Edmund Fitzgerald sank with 29 crew members aboard in Lake Superior. Gordon Lightfoot memorialized the event in a song that was widely played for a while.

1982 - The Vietnam Veterans Memorial opened in Washington, D.C.
