My first Axis buck!

Went on a hunt in Sonora , TX this week with my Dad. We where allowed to take one whitetail management buck or a Axis buck with horns over 26 inches, or the doe of our choice. Well I've been wanting an axis buck since my dad got his 4 years ago. I passed on one last year because i felt he was not of trophy size and therefore wouldn't beat my dad's  . Well we where hunting together on this trip when this massive buck showed himself! He didn't stay around for long and i wasn't about to let him slip away so I climbed out of the stand and went after him, and it paid off bigtime!

Sorry the pic is fuzzy, It's the best one i could get right before taking him into the processor/taxidermist. Yes he will be mounted, and i will also eat him! :thumbs2: His horns measured 36 inches long and had a 31.5 inch spread! 130 lbs field dressed and He is bigger then my dads!

LOL - at least now we know what happens when you smoke Marlboro's too long - your face explodes into a white powdered donut!!

My mom and step-dad had a bunch of Axis deer they were raising for canned archery hunts outside of Crockett, TX. They drove out to their property one weekend to do their weekly feeding ritual, and were surprised to see no movement by the deer on the property. After a bit of walking around to the various sleeping spots the deer favored on their land, they came up on a big circle of dead Axis. ALL of them were dead. They called out the game warden, and ultimately they determined a freak bolt of lightening must have struck the group an killed them all instantly...

Haha - well, between you and me, Aliens were the unanimous vote. But, in the interest of his career, the GW took the easy way out.

Great Axis Deer. Puts me in mind of the one that a DPS officer that lived in Rocksprings TX had mounted and over his fire place. Congrats a real trophy to be proud of.

Very nice! My wife wants me to get one too - so she can make pillows of some sort from the hide. Oh, she also wants some of the meat, too.

Couldn't have done it without the mask, He definitely would have seen me!

Yeah some people where telling me to make a pillow out of the hide? I'm not so sure about that. I asked the taxidermist to have the extra hide tanned for me, dunno what i'll do with it just yet but i assure you nothing will go to waste. I was raised with the notion that anything I killed I would have to eat. So when I fished I ate fish, when i duck hunted I ate duck gumbo, and when i killed a black bird I ate roast black bird.

Thanks for the comments!

As far as I remember it tasted like chicken. I do remember that my dads half accidentally fell in the fire

I shot a Javelina once.

I barbecued it.

It tasted like skunk smells. Someone else cleaned it and apparently severed a musk gland or something... Each piece I ate got bigger as I ate it.

I gave it a decent burial.

Never again will I shoot a Javelina.

I'd rather eat a raw black bird than a barbecued skunk any day.
