I have not shot it yet but will be going to the range on sunday with a few of my fellow police academy cadet's. I use for my EDC a Milt Sparks Versa Max II. Great holster and worth the wait. Here are a few that work well also: Tucker "The Answer", Comp-Tac Minotaur. Don't forget mag holder.

It is a Single Action and is designed to be carried with one in the pipe, hammer cocked and thumb safety on.

Your Kimber is a single action 1911 style pistol.

Hate to tell you this, but if you are joining HPD, the 1911 is not available for you to carry as a duty weapon. The only officers that can carry a 1911 are the ones grandfathered in years ago. I don't know about others like Harris County or the Constables, but with HPD it is a no go.

I rotate through three different 1911s for CC. My personal favorite is my Rock Island Compact followed by my (recently acquired) Kimber TLE II. I carry them in a CrossBreed SuperTuck Deluxe. Its comfortable, stable, and allows you to tuck your shirt in rather nicely. If your department won't let you carry a 1911 give Gaines County a shout, The SO and one PD issue Kimbers, while the other PD requires you supply your own gear. I don't know if any are hiring, but its worth a try.

+1 on the VM II. They have a wait time, but try here:

Fill in your email and they send you one as soon as they have it in stock. Act on it quickly though as they run out before the end of the day and in some cases in less than an hour.

I'm aware of it being a 1911 style pistol and since I have not shot it yet I was not sure it is single or double. I have SAFELY messed around with it and please correct me if I am wrong but when I chamber a round which cock's the hammer and fire it will chamber the next round correct and I will not have to recock the hammer???
EDIT I just watched a YouTube video of this particular pistol and it answered my question :thumbs2: .

One thing I do not like about the gun is the thumb safety as it is very easily switched from safe to fire. So if I do or am allowed to carry it I will not chamber a round until needed.

HPD is a no go for me as two years ago they said I was too old at 43yr's when their cut-off is 45yr's :headscratch . My department of choice is Fort Bend County's sheriff or constables office, I applied with them almost 2yr's ago and was denied employment as a jailor so I decided to get my TCLEOSE certification at UHD and will graduate the first week of May and Fort Bend will be sending out recruiters. I will also have my "OC Pepperspray - Mobile Video - Doppler Radar - Baton and Driving (PIT)" certifications aswell.

Once again I would like to thank everyone for your help and Happy Holidays :tiphat: ,

Yes, that is true. Racking the slide to chamber a round cocks the hammer initially. After that, each subsequent shot re-cocks the hammer.
There is an 'old rule' about 1911's, that you should never need to touch the hammer, ever. If you are touching the hammer for some reason during carry or operation, then you are doing something wrong. (I'd make cleaning an exemption to the above rule, as lint seems to get all around my hammer from carry :smilelol5: )
One thing I do not like about the gun is the thumb safety as it is very easily switched from safe to fire. So if I do or am allowed to carry it I will not chamber a round until needed.
I don't know what you define 'easily' as, but I carry that gun's little brother, the Ultra Carry II, daily with one in the pipe, and have had no problem with it accidentally switching.
However, you may not be aware, that gun actually has 4, not just that one, but 4 safeties:

-Slide safety - That thumb one you mention
-Grip safety - That tab on the grip must be depressed by a proper grip before it will allow the trigger to move to fire
-Firing pin safety - The firing pin is blocked and can NOT move forward until you press the grip safety as well
-Half cock - If the hammer should somehow fall without the trigger being pulled (heavy object blunt force, who knows) it will stop at half cock and not hit the firing pin. (which cannot move anyways due to aforementioned firing pin lock)
And that doesn't even count keeping your booger hook off the bang switch as a safety.

Modern firearms are designed to carry with a round in the chamber. The rampant litigation of the past few decades have made modern firearms 'lawyer-proof'.
99.999% of 'the gun just went off' reports can be traced back to someone having their finger on the trigger. plain and simple. Keep your finger off the trigger, and it will NOT 'go off.'

I recommend you read the following threads about carrying 'one in the pipe'

I'm curious, does anyone know what the reasoning is behind HPD's decision to not allow 1911s? I have always been a big fan of the design and my Colt Commander remains my favorite gun. I know Police Departments do a lot of research on these things (at least I think they do) and wonder why they would make a decision such as this.

I would strongly suggest that you get some good handgun training ASAP. It sounds like you are a novice handgunner and the profession you are interested in isn't the job for being a novice. There are several excellent instructors in the Houston area. If you are interested send me a PM and I will be pleased to suggest a couple of instructors.

i don't know about your 1911, but mine is not easily switched off. but more importantly, I would say as a peace officer, you won't have the time to rack a round when you have the need to draw your sidearm. my father worked 20 years for the federal gov't and carried colt commanders the whole time, always cocked and locked and NEVER had an issue. if your not comfortable with the whole hammer issue use a different weapon you are comfortable with....your life depends on it!
