I'm looking at learning more about AR 15s and considering doing my own build. Wanna build it from scratch though both because it would be easier to do a part here and there financially and because it'll teach me about the parts as I get them.

First I gotta get my learn on though, anyone know a good AR 15 book or website that will take someone who's never even disassembled one through the paces?

I'm considering going with an AR 10 over an AR 15, because I'm told the AR 10 uses a heaver, more stable round. Ideally this would be a weapon that would serve both as home defense (I already have a 12 gauge), backup hunting rifle and a defense rifle for the impending zombie apocalypse.

Input, resources, book recommendations, lectures about what a n00b I am are all welcome at this point :)

Brownells is a gun catalog business, but if you want to see how their stock will fit together, this is a fun web site to play with. I found their barrels to be some what limited as I'm looking for a 16 to 18 inch barrel with a full length gas system (the recoil is less sharp, and the wear on the weapon is slower. Plus, it is the system that the weapon is made for).

Well, I went through the same thing this past summer and bought in August. Lots of good articles at AR15.com as said. I read, talk to friends on theirs etc. Considered buy a standard model and upgrade, build myself... all you said. I live between Alvin and Dickinson. I finally went to The Arms Room in League City and had them build one of their models for me and I picked out the parts I wanted. They bought the Holland Gunworks down here and put together their own AR15s. Good price and they have a reputation of service and helpfulness that I can tell you is TRUE. Good people to talk to for information and direction. Travis helped me there. Mine is an AR15 for home defense because of lots of reasons which you will learn. Sweet to shoot too. FUN! I installed a lower parts kit into a stripped lower, and built a complete top end/upper from parts with the help of the AR-15.com articles.
