Don't know if this is the place for this, but I am very interested in the ins and outs on the TX Hunter Safety Course. I was born after the magic date in 1971, which is to say that I was born in 1973. I think I can figure out how to take the classroom section online, but am looking for the specifics as to the field portion of the class, in the DFW area, and the cost. Any info would be appreciated. Thanks, C.

ugh, I've got to go get mine as well. good luck. I've never needed it before as the only time I ever really go hunting is when I'm with my dad or grandpa.

Field portion? I took mine about 13 years ago and it seemed like a pretty long course. I think it was a couple of hours for 2 days then all day Saturday. I did mine at the local police station.

I took this class at Academy just last month. Sort of redundant for anyone with a CHL. Spent a lot of time on gun safety basics, expanded hunter-specific version of the "4 rules" etc. Not as much actual "hunting" information as I - a non-hunter from a non-hunting family - was looking for. But some basics of shot placement, time frame for proper field dressing and transport to a freezer or processor, etc.

Met some good people, and Academy kicked back a $10 gift certificate to all of us (takes a nice hunk out of the $15 class fee). Of course, my wife promptly grabbed the gift certificate and used it to buy clothes for the kids :confused5

All in all it was worthwhile, if a bit long, for someone well-versed in gun safety but completely clueless on hunting.

They've got an online course which you can fly through in 30 minutes...all common sense stuff (though I learned quite a bit about BP rifles). The 'Field' portion took me 5 hours and cost me $15.

You might check, if you moved here from another state. I believe TX recognizes out of state certs. You just have to have it on your person while hunting.

Learn something new every day. I may take it again some day if nothing else for a new card. I remember my class taking forever but I was pretty young back then too.
