Very interesting, I've frequently heard that guns can be over-lubed as well as under-lubed.

I got a chuckle on what they said about Silicone spray: Right up there with WD-40, but at least it'll shed water while your parts grind themselves into little shavings!

Speaking of WD-40, the non-lubricant lubricant, check out the 2,000 + uses for WD-40 on the WD-40 website. That is pretty interesting, too.

I have never had a malfunction of any kind of firearm due to liberal application of lubricants. I have had an AR15 malfunction because I followed someone's advice to run it on the dry side. I lubed it up properly, and it ran fine again. So I'm likely to use a little more lube than some people. You can always wipe off the excess.

The AR-15/ M-16 likes to be rather damp.

I have found that my M&P 9 likes to lubed with a dry lube. It gets a bit cranky with traditional gun oils.

What has worked well for me for my semi-auto carry pistols is that Wilson Combat white grease that comes in a syringe. I use it on the slide rails, and usually Slip 2000 for other applications. The grease stays put in hot weather and doesn't thin out, run, and stain clothing.

OTH, I know that HighVelocity swears by Mobile 1 10W40 motor oil on all his guns. He says that it if will stand up to the stresses of an internal combustion engine running at thousands of RPM, there isn't much that a gun can dish out that will cause the oil to fail. Plus the oil contains additives which impregnate the metal surface with protectants. I bought a 5" Springfield 1911 Loaded from him a while ago that had never been lubed with anything other than Mobile 1, and it was in remarkably good condition. Still is. That said, motor oil does run and will stain clothing. But, HighVelocity told me the other day that he still has the same quart of oil he bought a long time ago for something like $5.00, and there's enough left to last him for the next 10 years.

For the very few places I use grease: Brian Enos' slide glide. For everything else: FP-10

I've been using ATF to clean guns for years. I also use a teflon grease (very lightly) on the slide and rails. Never had any issues and guns look great.
