Seamus started a little over a year ago the thread "This Day In History". I thoroughly enjoyed reading it during my last check in of the day, usually at this time, just before I went to bed.

To say I miss it is an understatement. I would like to continue the general concept of a day in history thread, but devote it to our Great State. :txflag:

Tonight I will begin. I would like to invite you all to add to it if you see fit. Comments are always welcome. If this thread does not interest you at all, tell me. I don't know if I'll be able to do it every day, but I'll try. Here goes:

This Day In Texas History, December 13:

1777 - French engineer Luis Antonio Andry and his crew set sail on an expedition to map the Louisiana-Texas coast from the Mississippi River to Matagorda Bay.

1841 - Sam Houston became president of the Republic of Texas -- for the second time.
He first became the young nation's second president -- and first elected president -- in 1836, replacing interim president David G. Burnet.

1841 - A flotilla of the Texas Navy under the command of Edwin Ward Moore left Galveston to support the province of Yucatán in its rebellion against Mexico. Texas and Yucatán had formalized an alliance in September by which the latter agreed to pay Texas $8,000 a month for the upkeep of the Texas fleet. President Lamar approved of this arrangement and ordered the fleet to leave for Yucatán. Moore sailed with the Austin, the San Bernard, and the San Antonio for Sisal, Yucatán, on December 13. Sam Houston, who was inaugurated as president of the Republic of Texas on the same day, had a different approach to foreign policy and promptly ordered the fleet to return. These orders did not reach Moore until March 1842, and he returned in May to Texas.

1931 - The Conroe Oilfield in Montgomery County blows in.

1964 - In El Paso, TX, President Johnson and Mexican President Gustavo Diaz Ordaz set off an explosion that diverted the Rio Grande River, reshaping the U.S.-Mexican border. This ended a century-old border dispute.

1989 - the Texas legislature passed the Texas Workers' Compensation Act. The beginnings of workers' compensation in Texas extend back to 1913, when the legislature passed a law establishing the Industrial Accident Board and the Texas Employers' Insurance Association to provide for adequate compensation for injuries or death resulting from accidents on the job.

2000 - U.S. Vice President Al Gore conceded the 2000 Presidential election to Texas Gov. George W. Bush. The Florida electoral votes were won by only 537 votes, which decided the election. The election had been contested up to the U.S. Supreme Court, which said that the Florida recount (supported by the Florida Supreme Court) was unconstitutional.

Never crossed my mind that there ever was a Texas Navy. I'm native Texan, and took all the required history classes, even through college. :tiphat: learned something.

Great work, Joe.

There are so many obscure, fascinating aspects to history. If I ever knew about the diversion of the Rio Grande, I forgot about it.

One of the proudest days in my father's life was when, somewhen in the '50s if I remember right, the governor appointed him an Admiral in the Texas Navy. As best I know this honor is still bestowed for notable service to the state. He never let me live down the fact that after my more than 20 years in uniform he still outranked me. ;-)
