As far as I know, you can carry a handgun under that same conditions as any adult who is not in one of the more privileged categories (CHL holders, police, etc.).

Under age 21 you cannot buy a handgun from a licensed dealer, or get a CHL unless you are serving in the military.

I am not a lawyer, so don't try to take this free advice to the bank.

You should also check with the range. Some have limitations on people under 21.

You can't buy hand gun ammo unless your 21. But they do make 9mm & .45cal rifles ;-) I'm sure someone here will know the correct answer to your question.

A quirk about the law prohibiting buying handgun ammo unless you are 21. Many Years ago, my younger brother was hired as a police officer when he was 20. So until he had his 21st birthday, I had to buy his ammo for him. As far as his service revolver, I think he bought one from a friend. This was over 30 years ago, and it was a small agency that didn't furnish a service weapon.

So you can be a police officer at 20 and not able to buy ammo. :headscratch

Current qualification for state trooper:

Age: Applicants must be at least 20 years of age on the date of probationary appointment to the position of trooper-trainees.

Welcome Billyjoe. It's great to have another young person join us. As Longtooth said, you'll get more "carrying years" in than many of us.

txinvestigator quoted the section of the Tx. Penal Code that allows you to carry a handgun to and from the range. Just be sure to follow it as txi quoted it. For example, don't stop for a burger with a pistol in the car with you. However, to be extra carful you can lock the pistol in the trunk so it's not "on or about your person." If you do that, then you can have that burger. It also helps to have a shooting bag in the car so it looks like you really are on the way to or from the range.

Also, all this applies to pistols. You can have a long gun in the car with you anytime you want, as long as you don't go to prohibited locations.

Regards,
Chas.
