According to London's Sunday Times, the UK's counterterrorism police are warning businesses in London to expect a Mumbai style attack with massive casualties in the city sometime in early 2010.
After an exercise which simulated an incident of this type, officials have reportedly concluded that they cannot respond effectively to such an event.
It's unclear from the article what businesses in a disarmed country where self defense is vigorously prosecuted and the protectors they are told to rely on can't help are supposed to do with the information.

The UK has just gotten ridiculous on many fronts.
Islamist radicals are coddled.
People who defend themselves are prosecuted.
Bad guys, if jailed, get short sentences.
The police don't have guns.
The good citizens don't have guns.
The law abiding populace in the UK might as well just tie
themselves to concrete blocks and jump in the Thames.

I feel so badly for the entire population of Great Britain. An entire country disenfranchised of not only guns, but of any implement designed to defend oneself. Indeed, defending oneself is a crime unto itself.
But it used not to be that way. I read every comment that was posted by readers of that article. On page 10:

in Britain we have no more legal deterrent to prevent an armed assault than did the people of Mumbai, and individually we would be just as helpless as victims. The Mumbai massacre could happen in London tomorrow; but probably it could not have happened to Londoners 100 years ago.
In January 1909 two such anarchists, lately come from an attempt to blow up the president of France, tried to commit a robbery in north London, armed with automatic pistols. Edwardian Londoners, however, shot back – and the anarchists were pursued through the streets by a spontaneous hue-and-cry. The police, who could not find the key to their own gun cupboard, borrowed at least four pistols from passers-by, while other citizens armed with revolvers and shotguns preferred to use their weapons themselves to bring the assailants down.
They are without a doubt, absolutely helpless. God help them.

No need any more for the honorific of "Great". Just "Britain" will suffice, or "cool Britannia", as they liked to say in the Tony Blair era. Furthermore, with Welsh and Scottish devolution, "United Kingdom" is somewhat of a misnomer as well.

Ben Dover and . . .
I would not want to even change planes in that country.
