Please do not forget to put something under the tree for these little guys. These are basically children with beards; I've noticed Baxter poking around the gifts under the tree looking for his.

I can't help but think that they notice.

Bump. I agree. These dogs are the best.

If you have the means, please support your animal local rescues!! If you have the time and space, please also consider fostering! With the decline in the economy, there are more owner surrendered and abandoned dogs and cats than there are foster homes to take them in.

I'd like to plug two Boston Terrier rescues in Dallas -- abtr.net and texasbostons.com. and also a Great Dane rescue in Austin, www.pawsofaustin.org.

We can't foster full time because we have too many pets already, but we try to help when we can by transporting them. It's a small thing but it's rewarding.

I can tell you, it is possible to get two full grown Great danes in the back of a small toyota Rav4!! They fit, only because they were so underweight & malnurished. They were taken from their owners in far East Texas by animal control and both ended up in loving homes in Austin:


One of the best "happy ending" stories we've been a part of -- was a very OLD and blind female Boston Terrier was abanoned and transported from Georgetown to one of the Dallas BT rescue groups and wound up being transported all the way in Vermont! To know that old girl was going to spend her last days in a home that WANTED HER, still brings water to my eyes!! It takes very special people to adopted Seniors and I love them for doing it!!

When I mentioned fostering -- it doesn't have to be full time - this is Lucy. She stayed with us over a weekend while another full time foster was being arranged:

Sisu was found as a stray and turned into an animal orphanage in Dallas. We were so lucky to find him. He was 18 months old when we adopted him. He is so full of love and life. His name is Finnish (my husband's mother tongue) == it means "perserverance in the face of adversity"; and since he'd been out on the streets on his own for a while , it seemed to fit him. It is also the name of a Finnish military tank -- and that fits him too! He is solid as a rock! He's a clown and loverboy. We love him!!

I can't say enough to praise the work of rescue groups! It doesn't take much to help!! They need dog food, bowls, towels, toys, water & food bowls. If you can help, please contact one in your area. It's so worth it!

We currently have our own five dogs (four of them rescues), our grand-dog (while the kids are visiting family in New York), a foster dog until we find her a home, and we're dog-sitting while friends are in Italy for the holidays.

Is that nine? I've lost track. They range from a Westie, and another little terrier mutt about the same size, to an Australian Shepherd, a Great Pyrenees, and a Great Dane. Full house!

Wow you could be a poster family for rescue!! And it sure sounds familiar!! It's like having a doggie bed & breakfast.

Mine got a new raw hide bone.

Sam is a little over a year and a half old and Alvin is almost 5.

Seriously, if you have the capacity, pick up a pet from a shelter or rescue. You'll never have a better companion than a cat or dog thats been through heck and found a good home.

Here is my Cooper. I got him for V-day right after I got married, the wife thought I should get my first dog. :) I do have to say that he has made me a Lab lover, so gentle and happy all the time. Dont be fooled though he is about 95 pounds of mean if I am on guard or he dosent like the situation (strange how he can sense these things)

I love those pictures!! I can't imagine a topic bringing people together more than the love of pets.

While we're talking about rescue -- I'd like to put in a plug for MICROCHIPS. If your dog isn't chipped and it gets lost, it could s keep some dogs OUT of rescues and back in the homes where they belong!! FORT WORTH ― After a long, strange journey, it's the moment of truth for Jake the boxer.

A family is waiting to see if he is the beloved pet who vanished nearly two years ago from his home in northwest Fort Worth.

Brian and Bobbie Jo Bishop had no reason to believe they would ever see him again.

He's grayer and leaner than they remember, but there's no doubt it's him.

"Your momma never gave up on you," Bobbie Jo Bishop said during the tearful reunion.



Jake disappeared in 2008 after a spring storm damaged the fence in the Bishop's backyard, but they also have to wonder whether someone stole him.



They knew Jake remembered his name when he wagged his tail as they called to him.

The Bishops found Jake's old collar out in the street near their home after he disappeared. They walked the neighborhood for weeks calling his name, putting up posters and trying not to give up hope.

"Such a good dog," Brian Bishop said as he blew in Jake's face.

Brian Bishop searched animal shelters for months. His wife never stopped looking online.



A few days ago, she spotted a photo on the Web site for Legacy Boxer Rescue.



"This picture and that … It's the same dog," Bobby Jo Bishop said.

Animal control had picked him up as a stray. Legacy rescue got him out of a shelter.

"I don't know where he went,” Brian Bishop said. “It's baffling. Someone had him for a year. Thank God they took care of him. He's the same sweet dog as when we lost him."

"This is what it's all about," said Kim Ashley, rescue volunteer.

Ashley said of the 1,500 dogs they've saved, Jake is just the fourth to be reunited with his family and maybe the first to celebrate New Years.

"Jake, I missed you," Bobby Jo Bishop said as she kissed the dog.

It is a happy ending story; but I couldn't help - thinking (even if he had been stolen originally) if he had been microchipped, at least by the time he got picked up by animal control, his owners might have been found sooner!

One of my girlfriends has a cute little yorkie and I keep telling her she need to get him chipped. She says "well, he's never out of my control". And I say - you can't plan for the unexpected: what if a storm blows your fence down, what if you are in a car wreck and the dog gets thrown out of the car; what if there are repair men in your home and they accidentally leave the door open. I've had friends lose dogs in all three of these examples.

Just do it!!

Currently, I have three critters. I rescued all of them.

The most recent, while cycling this past June, I found on the side of the road barely alive. After an emergency visit to the vet and much love and home care he's now healthy and plays best he can with the other two. He's permanently disabled, but doesn't think so...

The love returned from them is daily and strong.

I currently have three also. All of them rescued. The latest little schnauzer is Sadie. She needed a home just before christmas, and we knew we had room for one more...lol. She loves our older (about 9) Schnauzer, but the older Lasa-apso (about 12) isn't sure about the newcomer. Time will tell if she will accept the other female in the house.
