I didn't want to hijack Joe's thread, so here is this one... :)

Can anyone recommend a good "History of Texas" book? Something that really covers the Texas Revolution, even dating back to the Medina Massacre and the Battle of Rosillo Creek...Is there such a book? The most info possible in one book is preferred.

I wasn't born in TX, but got here as fast as I could. Now I'd like to learn some more. :cheers2:

Michener's Texas is a good read. A lot of fiction and some bias, but it's set in a reasonably accurate historical scene. It might at least be a good place to start.

The Texas Almanac can keep you busy for a while, and it's free online: http://www.texasalmanac.com/history/highlights/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

Then there's http://www.texashistory.com/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;.

(I know where Joe gets his stuff, but mum's the word on that. ;-) )

Oh fiddlesticks Jim, it's no secret. :lol:

pbwalker, I'd be happy to share what I've come up with. I certainly don't have a monopoly on it. My little daily blurb comes from about 10 or 12 websites I check daily. Some of them give only one liners on what happened on a particular date. Others have entire pages on an incident & I have to edit down considerably.

I sometimes go to one website and type in a date and it comes back with pages and pages of hits for that date. Most times it's either births, deaths or marriages of notable Texans and a short biography. But some are really good.

Here's a couple of my favorite:

Lone Star Junction has a TON of articles and even books in Classics On-Line, I like The Archives section too: http://www.lsjunction.com/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

The Texas State Historical Association has a fantastic website "The Handbook of Texas Online":
http://www.tshaonline.org/handbook/online/index.html" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
Type in the search box for anything you want, people, places, events. For example type "Mier expedition " and you get incredible feedback.

Texas is rich in culture, history and heritage. We are the only independent nation(Republic of Texas) to ever become a State(State of Texas). Pretty neat I think.

I'd be happy to post all the links I use to do that thread, if you'd like. God Bless Texas. :txflag:

On the lighter side, there's "Texas History Movies." Not movies, but a comic strip that started in the 1920's. When I was in grade school, we got one every year in grades 1-4 (from Mobil Oil, I think) and I wish I had kept them all. I now have two copies--one from 1928 and one of the 1985 Sesquicentennial Editions. If you find an older one, be forewarned, it will not be PC--the Sesquicentennial Edition was PC sanitized.
