Sheriff’s deputies arrested 169 people and seized 114 roosters after raiding a cockfight Saturday in Parker County, authorities said.

The raid occurred about 3:30 p.m. in north Parker County near Poolville, Sheriff Larry Fowler said. The site had been under surveillance for two weeks, he said.

Many other people scattered as soon as a police helicopter appeared overhead, said John Goodwin of the Humane Society of the United States.

Child Protective Services workers took custody of 10 to 15 children ages 7 to 15, Fowler said.

Cockfight organizers had set up an arena inside a barn, Fowler said. Drugs and cash were seized, he said, and dead and injured roosters were also found. SNIP

PoolVille, What a name, Pool sound exactly like "Chicken, or hen" in French, spelled poule, and "Ville" is what other than city.

It is the perfect name for The "City of Cock"!

I don't know what happens to the average race horse once his racing days are over, but I do know what happens to the average race dog: He gets a shot of nembutal and that's the end of him.

Yes, a few get adopted by caring dog lovers, but most are killed once their racing days are over.

Yes, cock fighting is cruel, but pales in comparison to what happens to poor race dogs...yet little of this unconscionable mistreatment is ever heard about.

See, this is a classic case of drugs corrupting proffesional sports. Those "cock trainers" coerced those poor little roosters. "Take a little before the fight, it'll help you focus."
Then it's "hey, you won! Let's celebrate with a little more of "the stuff."
Now they have a pile of Roosters that overdosed on who knows what?
Moral: Friends don't give drugs to their cocks and make them fight.

They usually don't 'drug' the rosters. The drugs are being sold and/or used by the human attendees. Roosters will fight in the first place. When I was little my Grandma has some mean old roosters that would flog and spur you in a second if you came close to them. I usually gave them a VERY wide berth to make sure not to get caught by surprise.

A rooster may be one reason my brother and I aren't as close as I wish we were. When we lived in southern Illinois back in the mid-50's, our DAd got the idea that it would be a good thing to have some chickens so we could have fresh eggs, etc. Well, chickens need a Rooster to help them with the egg layin' business. We had a big mean red one

I'd tell my little brother when it was his turn to gather the eggs and then watch "rlol" as the rooster would get after him. One day the rooster got after me and I still have a scar on my right hand where that old rooster spurred me. I don't recall whatever happened to that old rooster but I do know my brother just ain't right.

In a city whose name in French translates to: "City of Cock" no less
(Thanks for the translation Beiruty!)

Just a little side note, you don't need a rooster for hens to lay eggs. They will lay them without a rooster. They will only get fertilized if there's a rooster around.

Why did I not know that?
I stink at farming and farm animals, I just recently found out a Pony is not a Baby Horse

It's sad to see dogs and horses put down after their racing days
are done because we can grow attached to them.

But don't roosters just end up on somebody's dinner table if they
don't go the fighting route? What's the big deal whether they die
by fighting, or get killed by Bo Pilgrim? Dead is dead,
just like concealed is concealed. :-)

Or does the chicken we eat just come from females?

Roosters are what they make McDonalds "chicken" nuggets out of.
