I appreciate the hard work the moderators do, and I don't want to add to their load, but I think it would be a really good idea to give a link to the forum rules, plus note in the post "edited by..." or "deleted by..." whenever a post violates the rules.

I just saw an ad that had been deleted for "violation of rule 13", with no other explanation. It only took me three clicks from that post to find the rule: Board Index --> Site Announcements --> Forum Rules. It ought to be at least as easy for a moderator to paste in the URL: http://texaschlforum.com/viewtopic.php? ... 41#p119397" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

Excellent suggestion except I believe that every member should know not only where the rules are but what they are.

If I am not mistaken I believe you are supposed to read the rules to be able to log-in the first time, but I could be wrong. I do know in the "Firearms" section it is the first post "READ BEFORE POSTING." ( http://www.texaschlforum.com/viewtopic.php?f=20&t=10175" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; )I do believe this is greatest forum out there. You do not have to be afraid to set with the lap top and the grand children or children and get smut.

Well put carlson1. I totally agree on all points.

I agree that people should know the rules. Especially for Rule 13. Seriously.

However, I think it's simply good manners for moderators to add a note if they edit a post, so they're not putting words in someone else's mouth.

It is even better manners for us to read the rules. They are very clear and very few. It should not be a problem.

Another point is that when a post is deleted or edited the posting member is sent a PM. That way their faux pas is kept private.

When I edit a post it to remove words not appropriate for the Forum not to add words or change meaning.

Posts are never edited to change the meaning, only edited to remove words or phrases that are in violation of the forum rules.

Keep in mind that while everyone should have read the rules - like everything they are subject to interpretation

On one hand we can discuss shooting people but at the same time cant use words from the bible to do it......

I think the editing is fine - Ive been pinged once or twice for using what I deemed PG 13 conversational words that by the way are in the bible and they were edited as being inappropriate. Thats fine, the transgression wasnt intentional. The content of the posts didnt change and I didnt get publicly called out for using bad words. I try to keep the rules in mind but, I participate in a number of forums and this one is the strictest on language, it will take some getting used to.

Thanks for the replies. As for the requirement to "read the rules", I have to ask: when is the last time you read --thoroughly read-- a user agreement, Terms Of Service, or software license? Everyone who joins a forum is presented with boilerplate language. Yadda-yadda-yadda. Just click "I agree" and get me to the content.

I know software geeks who read every word of every line of every TOS or license before agreeing. A couple of them, tops. Everyone else just clicks through to get to the content. Such "agreements" are about as valid as "you break it, you buy it" signs in stores.
