Any suggestions on who to send a gun to to have it refinished? It is currently blued, although the bluing is worn. Wouldn't mind having another type of finish..... suggestions as to who and what?

Not to hijack, but what about just rebluing a rifle? Do the same places mentioned above rate as well for that? Or should I look for a gunsmith nearby-ish?

I've gotten back my old .22 target rifle that was a bit abused while I was away at college & grad school, and the rust buildup is painful to look at.

Both CCR and Robar refinish handguns, rifles, and shotguns.

So what is the toughest finish available? If I refinish a gun, I prefer a black finish (instead of nickel or chrome looks) and I want something as good or better than Glock tenifer. Anyone have opinions/ideas?

Parkerizing doesn't seem as tough as tenifer. Whatever is done to mil-spec AR-15s seems close, but still not as durable as tenifer.

tennifer is not a finish, but a metal treatment that takes place before the black oxide finish that glock uses...

now if i were getting one of my glocks refinished for appearence and durability, i would look no futher then robarguns.com...ask for the np3 finish and you will be done...

Actually, this would be for a S&W J-frame I'm contemplating buying (it's finish is not a goner yet, but it's getting there and I want to have some idea of a refinishing costs before I decide to buy the gun).

The NP3 appears to be a nickel (silver) finish, yes?

i think your still confuesing the two processes....after the nitrobarburizing, which is a metal treatment, then you would still need a final finish...ie the np3, or some other kind of parerizing or blueing, black oxide or somthing else of that nature...check robarguns, they have a black finish too...the np3 is not really a shiney nickle or anything like that, its a very dark/dull grey finsh...not bad, very tough, holster wear resistant...

Ferritic nitrocarburizing is a black finish that looks a lot like black iron oxide but is harder and more durable. A thin sub-surface layer is enriched in carbon and nitrogen, resulting in high hardness and galling resistance. It degrades the corrosion resistance of stainless steels (forms chromium nitrides, taking the chrome out of the game) but enhances the corrosion resistance of carbon and low-alloy steels.

One commercial version is called QPQ - licensed by Kolene Corp.

A QPQed Smith would be cool!

this is wrong...its not a black finish like a black oxide, its very much like tennifer, its a metal treatment in a salt bath that changes the structrure of the metal to make it harder and resistant to corrosion...after this treatment a final "finish" would be put on the metal for looks and more protection...
