Don't give that raccoon a chance - use a Barrett .50!

Be careful, you'd be surprised how much those .22 rounds can actually penetrate, someone I know used his tool shed as a back stop... Went through both sides, and a fence. These WERE hollow point rounds. Maybe use a subsonic round? That or just trap it to avoid any holes in your house.

It may not be very effetive on a large coon but if he's not real big then try some rat shot. Then maybe you can just stun or wound him enough to get close enough and finish the job without Swiss cheezing your moms house.
Good luck and keep us posted and take pics.

Also if Mom's house is any city limits, discharging any firearm, even a .22, is likely illegal unless for self defense. Convincing a cop, much less a DA, that the racoon posed an imminent deadly threat to you won't be easy.
Try one of those Gamo super high velocity air rifles. Hit the critter in the head and it should go down, DRT.

The worst thing about shooting on in you attic is having to crawl around and over who knows what, keep from making a hole in the ceiling, and then having to crawl out carrying some kind of beast.
I would go for a baited trap, close to your access point.
Just saying.....

+1 On the trap. Probably the safest way.

Nevermind, my Dad got it with a Shovel! All that Marine Corp Training paid off! Thanks for the advice.
My other thought was a Fogger, leave the house for a day or two.

I know this from a similar experience in my youth. .22lr bolt action rifle, 20yds from rifle to outside wall of wood barn, then another 20yds to and through a metal pole barn, into the top of the door of my car which stopped it from traveling any farther. The car was getting a new/used engine and was raised. The bullet would have continued through the other side of the barn and hopefully not through the oil tank for the furnace in the pole barn. I lucked out that day.

I was going to suggest a pitchfork but I guess a shovel is good.
