Question about retired military for CHL...

Post by garcia946 »

I have a student that wants to take my class, which is not a problem....
My question is , doesnt retired military get a discount from the state in pricing??? Most all my students havent been active or retired military, just civilian.
I cant seem to find where Ive seen it before on the pricing for the state.
thanks in advance to all....

They'll need to include a complete copy of their DD-214 with an honorable discharge in order to get the 50% from DPS ($70/$35).

The statutory reference is in the Government Code, Sec. 411.1951. WAIVER OR REDUCTION OF FEES FOR MEMBERS OR VETERANS OF UNITED STATES ARMED FORCES, paragraph (c).

A regular copy machine copy of the DD-214 showing Honorable Discharge is good enough, it doesn't have to be notarized or certified or any of that.

If he retired less than 365 days before the date of application, the CHL is free. Over 365, it's 50% off.

The same applies to any active duty veteran.

texjames........

You could be a test case........

Copy your DD-214 and send it in to the CHL Dept with a note saying that you did not know you were eligible for the 50% discount when you paid online, took the course and filed the paperwork.

Ask them to update your file with the DD-214 and refund 50% of what you paid them.

Would be interesting to know if they comply with your request.
