My girlfriend has finally decided that she needs more protection then just pepper spray but she can not have a firearm at work or in the work parking lot. She has finally come to this conclusion after the multiple local shootings and robberies that have taken place in our area. The area that we live in is a middle class area that up until 2 years ago had no real problems or at least they were not nearly as prevalent. I have been telling her to get a CHL for over a year but she hasn’t yet. She will only carry a gun in the car if she goes on a trip out of town and I am not with her.

Now the taser questions because they are not mentioned in the regulations for the parking lot at her work, just firearms. She wants to be able to carry one from work to home or work to the grocery store and home. You know the basic stuff. I told her a taser was no substitute for a CHL but I guess its better then pepper spray. Anyways what are Texas state laws on tasers, I couldn’t find much? Do they have to be concealed? Are there certain places you can not take them? Any info would help.

I believe there are laws in Dallas County against carrying a Tazer, as for the rest of the state, nothing I can find.

If you go the Taser route, and they are an effective tool..... It will provide an intermitten 30 second ride for the recipient. It is designed to be a use, throw and run device.... which Taser, Int'l recognizes in that if you have to use it in a defense situation they will replace as long as you provide the incident report and the original purchase receipt..... Drawback, the cartridges are expensive and I would recomment firing 3-5, just to get a feel becuase it is considerable different then shooting a handgun (top probe shoots straight and the lower at a 8 degree cant) and both prongs must make contact for it to be effective....

Dangerous in a civilian world IMO for this reason: we have officers that deploy the taser and don't get both probes in, and they have to move to a different control method. We have a whole host of options to choose from.

If you're plan is to deploy a taser and hope for the best and then run...seems like it relies on luck more than I would like. Improve your H2H fighting to give yourself a viable backup plan if the doo doo hits the fan and you carry an electronic control device (taser, stun gun etc).

Mace, then tazer, gun, and if all else fails Knife.

But most people would just go, Gun all else fails knife

Training in combatives could certainly add options for his girlfriend, but not everyone has the temperment, physical ability, or desire to do so.

I wish she could carry a gun but if her job does find out somehow she will get fired. There is no legal problem with her carrying a gun at work. It is in the code of ethics contract at her work. There is no 30.06 sign. She is prohibited by having a firearm on her employers property. So worst that could happen is she gets fired. As for her learning self-defense, she could be a 3rd degree black belt in whatever and still don't be able to fight off an attacker. She is only 4 foot 10in and not even a match for a 12 year old boy. Years ago her much younger brother who was 11 could beat her in a wrestling match when she was 20. She is a little thing but trust me she can be fierce. I would be afraid of her if she was another foot taller.

Are you saying if she carrys outside of work she will be fired?
Also have her make sure that where she parks is OWNED by the Company. If she shares a parking garage she might have nothing to worry about.

As for her "Code of Ethics" is it just a sign up in the break room, or is it considered their employee Manuel/Company Policy? Either way I wouldnt risk it, but have they ever searched anyones purse or car?
Can she carry Mace/pepper spray?
Is the owner of the business onsite? Could she ask him? Does he set policy?
If I didnt work for a giant company my Boss said he would have no problem with me carrying, and has no problem with me having one in the car (I didnt tell him, I guess the NRA sticker and my Gun Talk at work gave it away)

If she carries on her employer’s property (which includes the parking lot and premises and they somehow find out she will be fired. It is a standard policy that she had to sign before she started working there. It basically says bringing a firearm on the property owned by the employer (which is a corporation) is grounds for termination. Like I said she could bring a gun and leave it in her car or on her person if she had a CHL but if someone found out (I don't know how if someone doesn't see it) she could be fired for breach of contract. It also says no knives, clubs and other weapons deemed dangerous. It doesn't specify what other "weapons are deemed dangerous" but that could be a maglite as far as I am concerned. There is no mention of mace or a taser but she knows other women at work who carry mace in their cars but only tell each other among friends at work. This is why I mentioned the taser. It is not specifically mentioned just like the mace.
A lot of companies are starting these contracts because of violence in the work place but really in the end who does it really stop? Answer: The people who want to protect themselves and others at the workplace. It’s the same concept as the college campuses in the fact that it is a shooting gallery for wackos if they decide to take out their anger on innocent people. The people who do these crazy things know that no one will have a gun around for 3-5 minutes before the cops can come. Didn't mean to go off topic the last little bet but you get the idea.

Is there another place, off company property, close enough that she could park there (and leave the gun in her car)?
