Just got my first AR15...

And I can't wait to get this thing cleaned up and to the range! I'm kind of a "late bloomer" with firearms but over the last 16 months I've acquired a few handguns, including my Springfield EMP .40 that I carry daily. I already had a shotgun (oldie but solid Mossberg 500a pump) so I decided that it was time for a rifle. I am comfortable with my knowledge of my handguns but feel like I have stepped into an entirely different world with this rifle. I know the safety related to handling this thing is the same as my other guns, but I still feel like I have a lot to learn about my latest purchase! I'm excited and ready to learn everything I can about my new AR!
For the record, it's a DoubleStar with A3 flat top with the removable carry handle, standard hand guard, 6 position stock, blah, blah blah... The price was right and I was ready to get it, so I brought it home yesterday. So far I've seen positive reviews for this manufacturer, so I'm hoping that my experience is the same as the posts I've read across the internet. This certainly isn't the most expensive AR out there, but I had no desire to spend 1500 to have a high dollar name stamped on the lower :)
As soon as I get it cleaned up I'm heading over to American Shooting Centers to get it sighted in fired for the first time.

Congratulations! I got my first rifle (AR as well) about a month ago too; worlds apart from pistols. Lots of cool stuff you can add on too.

Yep, you're absolutely right, but I'm going to let the wife get over this before I start buying any accessories for it, LOL!! She isn't exactly mad about the purchase, but she's not sharing in my excitement either! I figure I'm not going to push my luck!! Haha!

Installed a Chip McCormick trigger in one of my ars today. 3 to 3.5 lb with no creep. Think it is going to be really good and will probably replace my other triggers with this. Price is around $200 and it is a drop in. Enjoy your new toy.

I really like Doublestar. They make some sweet 1911s and have one of the coolest looking logos.
Now the real fun begins. There's a million possible things you can update. There's a couple things that I think are must haves for a new AR:
-Magpul Pmags
-Enhanced Triggerguard (Magpul or Spikes)

I agree with the P-mags, just got myself a 20 rd to supplement my 30 rd mag, very nice product. What's the deal with the trigger guard? Advantages over stock guard?

Got myself Magpul trigger guard but to me it mainly for the look since i neither have fat trigger finger nor shoot with glove.

Yeah, mostly looks but it does eliminate the gap and is more comfortable on the fingers when shooting. I have both the aluminium and polymer versions and both are great. For $9-18 it's hard to go wrong.

Any reason to go aluminum over polymer or vice versa?

They're both really nice in my opinion. The polymer one has a Magpul logo on it and comes in different colors if that is what floats your boat. The aluminum matches my lower better. Also, I think the aluminum would be easier to remove and re-install. As far as durability....not sure. Pmags can take quite a beating compared to aluminum mags so I almost want to say the polymer trigger guard is more durable.
