Wal Mart/Debit Card/Ripped off RANT

Went to wall mart to buy some stuff, 9 dollars worth.
Got an email the next day saying that there was some strange activity on my bank account.
Someone had withdrawn 500 Bucks from the same wal mart, the same day, with my Debit Card, which is hard because my Debit card is sitting in my pocket.
So
1. How did this happen?
2. The Bank basically said "its all good, dont worry"
3. How can I protect myself from this?

My guess is your card got skimmed. Probably not at that Wal-Mart but somewhere else.

I worry because I went to Salt Grass the night before, but the withdrawls were from the same Wal Mart and the same day I bought stuff

Yea, that part is very suspicious. What are the chances that, assuming your card was stolen prior to going to Wal-mart, the thief went to that same Wal-Mart the same day? Not very good chances I would assume. I also heard of a device that can just be waved across a persons back pocket and can steal credit card information. Maybe that's how it happened?

Okay back from the bank and from Wal mart
Basically
It didnt happen in the same Wal Mart it happened in Neberska!
So they told me to file a Police Report
DO I file in Austin, where I THINK the Number was stolen
Do I Call the Neberska police and report it there
Or Can I go to my local PD (Cedar Park)
I'm trying to call the family of Lawyers but they are all in Class, at Court, or out of country!
P.S. The Wall Mart in Neberska says they have the video of the guy

Mark, I was a victim of identity theft when I lived in Pasadena, California. The perpetrator was a woman living in the projects in New Orleans. I filed the police report with the Pasadena PD, and they forwarded a copy to the New Orleans PD. The skank was into me for almost $45,000 between several fraudulent accounts, but neither police department said they would do much about it. Apparently, it wasn't enough money. The New Orleans PD even had her address, but they said they weren't going to bother pursuing it. When I asked why, I was told that it has to be on the order of $100K or more before they'll consider it a big enough deal to pursue it.

If the person is in Nebraska that would hint the number was stolen over the net...
Have you used that particular card for online purchasing recently. Or, is that card linked to an online account you have. EX. Paypal or Ebay?

So if somebody skims your credit card and racks up $45,000 in charges, are you still only liable for the first $50?

I believe w/ a police report you are not liable for a single penny
You didn't make the purchases...someone else did!

Marksiwel did you contact the manager at Salt Grass to see if by chance they had any other inquiries along your line? Could have been an employee that works there that boosted your number.

So i got back from the Cedar Park PD (Fun Fact, theres a court in the building so I had to leave my gun in the car)
Filed a Report, super nice guys, they are going to pass it down the line to the a dective, and he will give us a call. Then I assume I call the Neberska PD and give them the case number or the Cedar Park PD do that.
Finally got in contact with my wife, explained.
Basically she started thinking of Who and How we sue Wal Mart, and the Guy if they Catch him, ever the lawer
Then I had to come in on my day off and deal with work shinniagins. I need a drink
P.S. Going to call Salt Grass if a second
PPS I'm thinking of taking my Old Debit Card to Eagle Peak and blowing a Giant hole in it.

2-1/2 years ago they got my wife's debit card and checkbook. Didn't cost us a dime, but 1-1/2 years of collection agencies harrassing us. Send them the police report and they go away for a while. It was a royal pain. I have no idea how much the total wound up being, but the police couldn't care less. We tracked down stores and people who saw them, found out where cameras could have got them.... police didn't bother. They told us it wasn't worth the time. (side rant, but they can find time for traffic enforcement????)
