I know this was covered in my CHL class but I can't remember so please bear with me. When your CHL is due to expire do you have to do all the same stuff you did to get one in the first place. This was my first CHL and was wondering if I have to do the same 10 hour class and take tests or do I just apply to DPS for a renewal online or by mail and just update my photo. Just exactly what is the proceedure for a 1st time renewal? If this question has been asked and answered please give me the thread. Thx

The renewal procedure is the same with the exception of a shortened classroom portion. 6 Hours not 10 hours.

Renewal can be as little as 4 hours (altho mine are typically closer to 5 or 6 to cover "need to know" info. better). Yes, as of now anyway, just one fingerprint card (instead of two), new photo, same written and shooting test as for original license. DPS typically mails license holders a letter describing options about 5 or 6 months before expiration. Just be sure to complete the "Change of address" form if you move.
