New CHL application and mental health question

Hello, hate to have to put "mental health" in the subject line. Its always looks bad. Well I have some questions I need to ask.
I am a 22 year veteran just out the Army. I want to get my CHL but an worried about some issues in my past. I will get to the point. Up in till about 2005 I was seeing a shrink once every 3 months. It was stupid really the whole reason I had to go to him. I around 15 or 16 and I was bullied consistently in school . Instead of taking it, I fought back. I was in a fight almost ever other week. Well because the school could not comprehend the possibility of me being bullied,(sarcasm intended) they forced my mom into making me see a shrink as a condition of me staying in school.Well I stopped around mid 05, move away into a new town and new school and finished off high school with no further problems. After about a year after that I joined the Army. Went to Germany deployed to Iraq came back and PCSed to Fort Bliss and got out with a Honorable Discharge. I have since then bought many guns and have passed many background checks. Now I am trying to get a CHL and have become worried about me being denied because of the above. I should add that this took place in Wisconsin were I grew up. I worry because this background check unlike the one to purchase a firearm wants me to list the last 5 years of were I lived and worked. I have NEVER been in a crazyhouse and have never been found by a court to be mentally unsound. I have no criminal record. I am just worried that if they find this they will jump to conclusions. Should I be concerned?

Welcome to the forum.

In my opinion, you don't need to worry about your juvenile counseling sessions. It was over five years ago, and you weren't committed, adjudicated mentally incompetent, or diagnosed with a psychosis or drug or alcohol problem.

Seeing a doctor or therapist is not a disqualification. There are diagnoses that are disqualifiers, but counseling itself is not.

Agree with other responses. You have nothing to worry about. Talking to a counselor with no special diagnoses, commitment to an "institution", or prescription of certain drugs you should have no problem.

If you do have a problem, let us know. I'm sure we can collect enough money for an Army Vet to cover legal expenses if for some strange reason you had to fight a denial in court.

Thank you for the reply, I appreciated the very kind words from the last poster. I do intend to proceed with the CHL. Hopefully if I could get in the Army and buy firearms then I could get a CHL. (Fingers crossed) :roll: Could anybody explain the the whole process of the background check. Let me repeat I have NO criminal history and have not been institutionalized, just the childhood problems I mentioned above.

Don't know the process beyond what is stated in law. Read over the relevant statutes in the following link:

http://www.statutes.legis.state.tx.us/D ... tm#411.172" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

Pay close attention to 411.172 subsection a (7) and all of subsections d and f

Ok just read it. None of that apply to me to my knowledge. I read the whole section of eligibility. Woo this is one heck of a long process it seems.

Sir, I agree with these folks.

So, don't worry about it. It won't be a problem. You aren't the only person to see a therapist. I know you know this, but I'm just sayin'... ;-)

Bring all your residence info with you. I'd bounced around too, for the previous 5 yrs when putting in for CHL. I just researched my last 5yrs of addresses and brought all that information, ready to be transcribed on the CHL packet, to the class. Yeah, it took me a bit longer to fill out that residency page than many others in the class, but I had my info beside me ready to be filled out on the form. You'll be fine.

Thank you for your service.
Good luck and welcome to the forum.

Very good advice. I moved around quite a bit before I got my first CHL too (college - back n forth between parents' house and dorm rooms; then post-college early journalism career seems I got a new job in a new town every 6 months). In fact, I still keep this running log of my previous residential addresses and employment history up to date and in a file. Never know when you might need that info.
