Galveston -- Two men were arrested and charged with an armed robbery that took place around 8:30 p.m. Thursday in the 8000 block of Seawall Boulevard.

Two residents of an apartment there were returning from the beach when the robbers took cash, jewelry, a cell phone, and keys.

Robbing people who are leaving the beach has its pluses and minuses. People in that position are pretty vulnerable, usually wearing a minimum of clothing. They are unlikely to be armed (though criminals never seem to consider that). OTOH, there is no use for money on the west-end beaches. I don't know why anyone would be carrying cash while swimming.

The victims in this case are fortunate that the incident did not turn into a home invasion, kidnapping, or worse.

Robbery is very unusual west of 61st street. Out-of-town criminals are usually in Galveston either to consult with their island "colleagues" or have sex-and-drugs parties in the cheap motels on the east end.

I have a feeling that some part of this story has not been told.

I hate parking on that sea wall. Especially the east end. I will do all I can to try and go surfing in surf side just so I don't halfto deal with that area. It really makes me nervouse to leave my gun in the car there too. Even if I see someone doing something to my car by the time I paddle in and get back they would be long gone. I always feel like an easy target walking back to my car for robbery or car jacking becuase I obviously have nothing to defend myself with except my board.

Let me tell you my strategy on the seawall at Corpus. My wife is from there, the sweetest little Serena lookalike you ever saw. I wear a Speedo on backward (I am 64 and fat) with a Taurus 709 Slim in a Smartcarry. First off, any respectable robber would be grossed out by me and run the other way. But (no pun indented) if my reaching into my Speedo didn't do it....
