Sheriff’s Office Identifies Man Killed By Turley Homeowner

The Tulsa County Sheriff’s Office has identified the intruder who was shot and killed by Turley homeowner, Michael Lish, late Thursday night. The sheriff’s office says the intruder was Billy Jean Tiffey III, 19.

The incident happened at a home in the 6000 block of North Owasso just after 10 p.m.

According to Tulsa County sheriff’s deputies, a couple was entering the home through the back door when they heard a noise in the master bedroom.

Deputies say the homeowner went to the bedroom and confronted the intruder.

“He walked in until he got close to the master bedroom, at that time he saw a burglar in the house, the burglar was carrying a sword that belonged to a homeowner, approached the homeowner, the homeowner told him to stop, pulled out his gun, guy didn’t stop, and shot him,” said TCSO Captain John Bowman.

Bowman says the intruder then reached for a gun in his pocket, so the homeowner fired two more shots, striking the man in the chest, killing him.

Detectives from the sheriff’s office found Tiffey dead in a hallway of the home, and besides the sword by his side, say he did have other weapons with him.

“He had a .38 caliber handgun in his pocket, he had the homeowners 9mm handgun, a stun gun and a knife,” said Sgt. Shannon Clark, Tulsa County Sheriff’s Office.

Tiffey was recently released from the Tulsa County Jail and has a record of drug offenses and driving under the influence.

Those court records show Tiffey’s last arrest was in February.

Deputies questioned the homeowner, but did not arrest him because it appears to be self-defense, and though it’s not an issue in this case, the homeowner does have a concealed carry permit.

Deputies say the homeowner did not know the suspect and the homeowners were not injured.

Although the bad guy had to be shot 3 times to stop the threat, and the homeowner came out on
top, I believe that the homeowner advancing on an unknown number of burglars could have gone
south in a hurry.

You shouldn't bring a knife to a gunfight, no matter how long that knife may be.

This is why I like to keep a shotgun out of sight but accessible just inside the door we normally enter through; buckshot speaks louder, and rarely needs to be repeated.

All they had was "a noise in the master bedroom." I don't call the cops to come see if my cat's playing with the lamp cord, but I do have my wife and daughter wait at the door while I make sure that's all it is.

Well, I know what kinds of noises my dogs make, so if it's not one of those the police are getting a call. Besides, when I come home my dogs are at the door waiting for me, not back in the bedroom.

Good thing this homeowner was carrying or it could have been very unfortunate. If I did not have dogs to prevent the BG from entering in the first place and this had been me coming home from work I would have had to retreat and call the police. :banghead:

Just crazy! At least the homeowner acted and prevailed in self defense.

SIA, this is Texas, the homeowner is justified in his act. Beside, if we carry we need to train, train very hard, to "clear out" your house when you come home and you find out that some BG has now possession of your firearms and your valuables.
This crime does happen more often as is this story.

Actually, B, it was in Oklahoma. I don't know, but I think they also have a Castle law there.

Beiruty:

Whether it's TX or OK, I'm totally OK with the GG shooting
the BG. I just wanted to point out that approaching an unknown
number of possibly armed assailants sometimes results in the GG
getting shot.

In this case the GG prevailed, so it's all good.

Conversely, retreating from an unknown number of attackers can get you equally dead, I'd rather become the "aggressor" and push through, than retreat in most circumstances.

This is why I always secure my swords, knives, and stunguns prior to leaving the house.
