In Cooperstown, New York, yesterday, a 16-year-old male allegedly armed with a .22 rifle ran after a group of teenagers in a park. One of the teenagers ran into a police station. The armed male shot the other teen and himself before being subdued by the lone police officer in the station.
"If [the officer] had been out on patrol, this might have ended very differently," [a police spokesperson] said.

The small-town department has six full-time officers, and the station is often empty during the day. [He] had only been in the building to fill out some paperwork.
The shooter is in serious condition. The teen that he shot was treated and released.

No motive is known. The two teens attended the same high school. School officials said they knew of no disciplinary problems.

I have worked in Cooperstown many times, and it is indeed a small town.

A bunch of years ago there was a tornado that touched down in Hyde Park, NY south of Cooperstown and tore up the telephone and power facilities pretty badly. NYTEL sent a bunch of us out there to put the telephone stuff back together, and we wound up waiting in Cooperstown while the worst of the power problems were fixed. Some of us spent the morning touring the Baseball Hall of Fame, but as one of the "leaders" of the group, I had to go over to the police station regularly to find out when it would be time for us to head on down. Although there was a telephone garage in town, the NY State Police had decided that they would be the final arbiters of when we finally would be allowed to go, and that meant the communication would be through the [police.

Nice little old fashioned station back then, and I doubt it has changed much.
