The above link is a 5 minute, 30 second video of a jewelry store attempted robbery
in Bardonia, NY.
The jewelry store owner is a USMC veteran of the Vietnam War, having fought in Khe
Sanh (sp?).
There are some amazing things that happen in this video: the owner has a gun pulled
suddenly on him and put in his face. He distances himself from the robber, pulls his
own 5 shot revolver, and engages the 2 robbers very quickly. You can tell he's very fast
at pulling his own weapon because the entry door to the store shatters very quickly after
he runs from the gun in his face.
Some of the things that could have gone wrong, though: He only had a 5 shot weapon,
apparently did not have backup piece, and lost track of the shots he fired. He thought
he had only fired 3 shots, but had emptied his piece.
Furthermore, the bad guy he shot in the white jacket had his own gun underneath him.
If the BG had been wounded less severely, he could have drawn on our GG and shot him.
The GG thought he had 2 shots left, and would have been unable to return fire since he
had NO shots left.
The store owner did not have a cell phone on him and lost some time in getting help.
Overall, things turned out great, but it was touch and go there for a while.
For those that don't think you can draw on a drawn gun, watch this leatherneck show
you how it's done!
Enjoy.

In a high stress situation like this, your recall of how many shots you have fired has to be unreliable at best. I'm sure that's why most defensive firearms experts recommend reloading when possible -- even if you
think you have additional rounds in the gun -- vs. waiting for the slide to lock open.

Not intending any criticism whatsoever, but this is one reason why neither my 5 shot revolver nor my 6 shot Keltec are not my primary choices for CCW.
I generally don't load myself down with more than one extra magazine when belt carrying. I'll carry two extras in my shoulder rig, but that is as much to balance the weight as anything else. But I do think it is important to have at least one reload available. This guy shot 5 rounds in about 5 seconds or less, and had the guy in the white sweatshirt been just a tad more determined, our good guy's goose would have been cooked. Even with a low capacity gun like my 1911, I have 9 rounds on tap with an 8 round reload. Most gunfights never last more than a few rounds, and this fight was pretty one-sided as the guy in the trench coat does not appear to have opened fire, but heaven help the good guy if there had been an exchange of gunfire.
Even so, he showed amazing pluck.

Prime example of why my primary carry when possible is my Taurus with at least a spare mag, when I have to downsize to one of the Kahr's or my Ruger I have a couple of reloads.
If I owned a store especially a jewelry store you can bet I would have several higher capacity weapons onsite with the spare mags on my person. I guess being in New York the guy was just lucky to have a handgun availiable, at least he wasn't in Chicago.

Great post and link SIA. This reminds me of a jewelry store owner in Houston with whom my mother did some business (sold/traded in some of my deceased grandma's old gold jewelry). My mom wanted to introduce me to this man because he carrys a cocked-n-locked 1911 and two spare mags openly on his belt while in his store. She thought I'd find that "cool", which of course I did.
As to the NYC jeweler, I agree with the mild criticism, but hey they guy showed GUTS and defended his life and his property valiantly. Agree completely that this is why I ALWAYS carry at least one reload for any gun - usually two for a small gun like a 5-shot revolver or my 6-shot LCP. Also agree that if after shots are fired there is a "lull" in the action, go ahead and reload so you know you have a fresh full firearm to fend off any counter attack.
Anyway, again great link and glad that ol' Marine made it out unscathed.

Wow, the guy is lucky, and I am glad to the outcome was what is was. Now that I think about it, my carry piece is a taurus slim 9mm with a 7+1, with a spare clip, after this story, I'm looking for another clip.

Great video. I am glad it worked out. While his actions were risky, compliance can be just as dangerous. He may well have given them whatever they wanted and been shot anyway. Better to take a chance and defend yourself than rely on the mercy of the guys who came in to rob you.

I thought it was rather ironic that only "black trench coat"
had drawn his weapon, but in the flurry of GG rounds, it was
"white coat" that caught at least one round. Which paralyzed
him from the waist down and took 3 more years to kill him.
It doesn't appear that the other BG was hit.
IIRC, the tape doesn't seem to mention where the GG's gun was,
either onbody, or under the counter somewhere. I watched the tape
again to see if I could "make" his onbody location, but could not see
it.

At least he had training and guts. Good for him! I don't know if the 5-round speedloader I carry would save me under stress, but I carry it when not carrying my 15+1 weapon.

As someone that has had a pistol pointed between my eyes at bad-breath distance, I can attest to the fact that you do not think, you react. It just either comes that fast or it doesn't come at all.

To help set the background, Bardonia where this incident occurred is about 37 miles north and west of the city, across the Hudson River in Rockland County. This is considered "upstate" by NYC dwellers.
Most of Mayor Bloomberg's hoplophobic insanity stops at the city's borders, and "Upstate" folks in most counties can get pistol possession and / or one of the state's multiple classes of carry permits (they're not the same thing) through their local law enforcement agencies.
