Not to worry. Okies are friendly, except when the Sooners play the Longhorns.

Here's a question I just thought of.

Let's say you went to visit one of these states that has reciprocity with Texas and it happened to be an open carry state. Does that mean that with your Texas CHL you could openly carry just like the people that hold CHL's from that state?

Also, do these states give you an option to conceal your handgun if you choose, or is it open carry or don't carry at all?

I am not a lawyer, but here's a layman's understanding of the answers to your questions.

If a state has an open carry law, you may carry openly there with or without a CHL from TX or any other state, subject to that state's restrictions on places where carry is not allowed.

Some states allow only open carry, and do not have a concealed carry provision. In those places it's open carry or nothing. In others, open carry is available to anyone who can legally own a gun and concealed carry is restricted to those with valid CHL permits recognized by that state.

Some, like California, allow open carry, but the gun must be unloaded.

The laws vary considerably from state to state and change frequently. It's really important to get the latest information whenever you plan to cross state lines with your guns.

I understand, thank you for the response. Like you said, If I travel to another state and decide to carry while there I will for sure be in the know on their laws. Sounds like everywhere has it's differences from the other states.

I noticed in reading the linked article that in Oklahoma one will still have to have a license to open carry. Presumably reciprocal recognition of your Texas CHL will allow you to open carry in Oklahoma. This is different than states like Virginia, where you don't need a license to OPEN carry, only concealed carry.

Any chance our great state will be oc in the future? Is this something that has even brought up to our law makers?

I asked that when I took my CHL class and my instructor said that it had to remain concealed. (didn't state where they got that information) Reason being is that we still have to abide by Texas laws, as well as the other states laws, and our license is for conceal not open carry. I haven't researched to find out if that's true or not, but I'm not taking a chance.

Agreed. Just wandering if the oc idea had been brought up in Austin to make Texas an oc state or at least optional.

I don't know if it has been brought up. But I do know that I would want it to be an OPTION. Not mandatory. I'm the only one I want knowing whether I am armed or not.

I think unlicensed open carry is good. I think that allowing CHL holders the option is great. I, however, will carry concealed whenever practical for a number of reasons.

It would also allow judges to carry weapons into the Capitol.

I think that is a good move!
