Georgia: Two Pro-Gun Bills Heading to the Governor!

Two important pro-gun bills (Senate Bill 291 and Senate Bill 308) have both successfully passed and will now head to Governor Sonny Perdue’s (R) desk for his consideration.

SB291 would allow a person lawfully licensed to carry a concealed firearm the right to carry in all non-secure areas and while dropping off or picking up passengers at an airport or airport facility. Also included in the bill is a provision that would make the license renewal process much easier by basically creating an automatic renewal. Instead of the licensee having to remember to renew, the probate court will be required to send out renewals 90 days before expiration.

SB308 would reform Georgia’s concealed carry laws so that the concealed carry license would enable the person to carry any handgun or knife, openly or concealed. SB 308 would also allow concealed carry license holders to carry in more places by repealing the broad and vague “public gathering ban.”

On the one hand, Georgia CHL's don't have it as good as Texas CHL's since they
can't carry onto airport parking lots or non-secure areas. They also have the
ambiguous "public gathering" rule with which to contend.

But look at the SB308 bill - it would allow Georgia CHL's to carry any handgun or knife,
open or concealed.

WOW!!! You could carry open or concealed. ANY handgun. ANY knife.

My comment is that there is a serious sea change, and the time is right to make radical changes. I've written Alice Tripp and my state rep urging them to really push hard for radical pro-rights improvements in 2011.

We've heard it argued in the past that because Texas had banned carrying a handgun for 120 years (except for a few circumstances), CHL was such a radical change that anything else must be incremental, lest we upset the political balance and wind up losing ground.

But:
-- Arkansas and Oklahoma both shared the same long-time carry ban suffered by Texans. Both states joined the must-issue concealed carry club after Texas did. Oklahoma joined several years later, yet they're on the verge of legalizing open carry, and Arkansas is probably close behind. (Yes, both states have some carry restrictions that are worse than Texas, for the record.)
-- Arizona had traditionally legal OC, but joined the CC party well after Texas. And they just took the most radical step of all: they joined Alaska and Vermont and became the third state to allow anyone who may legally possess a firearm, to legally carry a handgun, open or concealed, without asking permission of the state.

It's time to go bold in 2011.

Since it was too much to ask for Texas to be a trailblazer, hopefully it'll at least be a follower.

I wonder if these states have a law similar to 30.06, and how this will affect businesses there.

It is a whole different political climate now than it was just a year ago. People especially in Arizona have proven they are willing to step forward and be rebelious against those who are in control at the Federal level. If the Rebellion spreads into this years legislative races. this might happen here. but the fact that anyone is willing to take leftist like Mr white as serious mainstream candidate for a statewide position has me a little concerned. Last terms legsilatures let the minority party party push them around. They say that rebellion is contagious, the Tea parties are an example of that.. Hopefully what is happening in Arizona will spread to here. I'm willing to concede our position as leaders to Arizona as long as we get the job done.

If the automatic renewal does not involve a background check, they will lose both their NICS exemption and reciprocity with numerous states.

Between the economy and other factors, the time is right to push for more liberal gun laws.
