It has been a few years since my last visit. Is it worth making a day / evening trip down there this weekend weather permitting? I have found mixed reviews over the interweb mostly less then favorable reviews.

It's fine as long as you have a couple things...1)a plan with places to visit( you do not want to get lost down there), 2) an idea of what time you want to be out of there, and 3) deff a gun.
The West End/Deep Ellum can get pretty shady after the sun goes down, no pun intended.
I wouldn't carry my wallet either. Just carry the cash you'll need, DL and of course your CHL and choice of weapon to protect yourself.

West End is not bad it is still family friendly for the most part but like most areas you need to always be aware of your suroundings. Deep Ellum I would not go near at night. I go work in both these areas during the day selling food to restuarants around their.

I was there this afternoon (Tuesday), playing tourist. I was happy to see several police officers, including a couple on foot and a few on bicycles. One bike cop saw me looking at the "you are here" map, and offered help. I thanked him, having already found what I needed to know.
Good job, DPD!

Thank you. I am planning on doing the touristy thing with my wife. It has been a few years since we have got away from the house and just goofed off. Most reviews that I had read that were posted recently were how bad the entertainment has fallen off and it almost seems to be a ghost town. Glad to hear that it may still hold some value and fun.

Thanks again

It is but the letters are not 1" in height. Other than that, the wording is exact.

I spent a hour mulling around Dealey Plaza one weekday evening last October. A fella came up and started to give me an unsolicited "free" tour of the Plaza's historical/geographical highlights. I thanked him and moved on, not wanting to get hit up for a $donation in the style of New Orleans street comedians ("I can tell you where you got your shoes... ON YO FEET!"

Off Topic: I also drove through the Plaza about a dozen times that evening, and came to the following conclusion: President Kennedy's motorcade must have been driving realllllllllllllllllly slowly for it to take six seconds to go from the corner down to the overpass. That little downhill stretch of Elm St. is short!!!

When my brother's band comes into Dallas, they usually play clubs down in Deep Ellum, and he has never reported any trouble to me. On the other hand, he flew in here once for a gig and I picked him up at DFW and drove him to the club he was playing at. I remember thinking at the time that my "kid" brother (he's 55 yrs old) takes risks I'm not particularly interested in.
