A police officer wounded in a mall shootout was listed in serious condition Monday, two days after he shot and killed a man suspected of shoplifting, police said.
Officer Jared Reston was shot Saturday night outside the Regency Square mall but was conscious when he was taken to Shands Jacksonville hospital in critical condition, said Undersheriff Frank Mackesy. After surgery, he was listed in serious condition, said sheriff's spokesman Ken Jefferson.
Police said Reston's bulletproof vest saved his life, stopping three bullets fired into his chest. He was hit in the face, leg and buttocks.
The shooting happened when Reston and another officer, both off-duty but in uniform, began chasing two shoplifting suspects, according to a sheriff's office report.
Reston repeatedly ordered one of the suspects to stop but he didn't. At the end of the chase, Reston was knocked to the ground and the man fired several times at the officer, Mackesy said. Reston was able to get up and return fire.
The suspect who was killed was identified as Joel Abner, 18. During the gun battle, Reston fired 14 times and Abner fired 12, police said.

I read a very detailed account of this shootout in the latest edition of American Handgunner
magazine. I accessed http://www.americanhandgunner.com" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;, but could not find the complete article by
Massad Ayoob so that I could post it here. Any and all out there in forum land are encouraged to
post the original article if you can source it.
Jacksonville, FL (aka Jax) has the highest violent crime rate in FL according to Ayoob.
Two off duty LEO's from the Jax area were in full uniform working security at a mall.
One shoplifter, a white male, was caught but a black male ran away. The 2 officers gave foot
chase.
One of the LEO's was a workout kind of guy and kept up with the bad guy easily. The footchase
went on for about a quarter of a mile, leading to another mall. The front LEO had outpaced his
partner and put hands on the suspect, who then pulled a Glock .45 stolen in 1993 and shot the LEO
in the face, right below the centerline of the LEO's lower lip, and continued firing at the LEO.
The LEO had not realized that the BG had a pistol and when the first shot penetrated his jaw just
below the centerline of his bottom lip, he didn't even realize that he had been shot. He thought the
bad guy had punched him with a fist.
The LEO fell backwards into a dry retention pond, drew his Glock (.40 IIRC) and began returning
fire while supine, with a .45 bullet in his face, 3 .45's that him COM in his body armor, and additional
.45's that hit him in the leg and buttocks. He was firing one handed, at the BG, an 18 year old
male. He couldn't get up from the ground due to the leg wound.
When the BG realized he couldn't outrun the bullets, he boldly approached the officer MORE CLOSELY
in an attempt to kill the LEO. The LEO grabbed the BG close to him, put his Glock against the BG's
head and contact shot him with 3 rounds to the skull, resulting in the shoplifter/attempted murderer
becoming DRT.
The LEO had fired 14 of the 16 shots from his Glock. The BG shot 12 rounds from his Glock.
IIRC the LEO caught 7 rounds and the BG also caught 7 rounds. Shooting distance was anywhere
from contact shot, out to 10 yards, then finishing with contact shots to kill the BG.
Although the authorities ruled that the LEO made a good shoot, certain parties are complaining
about the shoot.
I've just paraprhased this, but if you can get the above magazine, Massad Ayoob really details
effectively this fight to the death between GG and BG.
